Coed Tan-y-graig

The woodland around Coed Tan-y-graig, just inland from Aberystwyth, feels like proper Welsh forestry - dense conifers mixed with older hardwoods, the kind of place where afternoon light filters through in dusty shafts and the ground stays damp even after dry spells. It's a working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means you won't find cafes or marked trails, but you will find quiet. Real, genuine quiet.

Walkers get the most from this one. The terrain rolls through typical mid-Wales undulation, nothing punishing but enough to keep your legs honest. Allow a couple of hours to properly explore without rushing. The forest sits close enough to Aberystwyth that you could easily slot it into a coastal holiday - drive inland for an afternoon when the beach feels too crowded or the weather turns damp.

Bringing kids? They'll enjoy mucking about in the trees for a bit, but there's not enough infrastructure to occupy them all day. Pack wellies regardless of the forecast. There's a decent cluster of holiday parks within a few miles - Silver Fern Glamping and Morfa Bychan are barely more than a mile away if you're basing yourselves in the area.

Free to access, open whenever. No facilities, no fuss. If you want a break from the seaside bustle and don't mind rough edges, this does the job.
