Allt Fad

The forest walks around Allt Fad, just outside Aberystwyth, offer proper Welsh woodland without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots. This is conifer plantation mixed with deciduous trees - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, especially on weekday mornings. Trails wind through decent elevation gain, so expect some huffing and puffing, but the views back towards Cardigan Bay make it worthwhile.

It's ideal for walkers who want a proper leg stretch rather than a gentle stroll. The terrain is varied enough to keep kids interested for a couple of hours, though this isn't a playground-and-cafe type destination - bring snacks and water. Allow between 90 minutes and two hours depending on which paths you take. You can knock off a quick 45-minute loop if time's tight, but that feels rushed.

Coming out of Aberystwyth itself, you're well-positioned for a broader rambling holiday. Silver Fern Glamping sits barely two miles away, making it a natural evening walk option if you're staying there, and Morfa Bychan Holiday Park is similarly close. The forest works brilliantly as a morning activity before heading into town for lunch or visiting Aberystwyth's seafront attractions.

Free access, as far as we can tell - it's managed forest, not a ticketed visitor centre. Muddy underfoot in winter and wet weather, so decent boots are non-negotiable. Go in spring or autumn when the light filters through nicely and you won't overheat climbing the steeper bits.
