Parc y Dob

The forest at Parc y Dob, just inland from Bangor, is proper woodland - the sort of place where you can actually lose an afternoon without trying. Ancient trees crowd the paths, dappled light filters through, and there's enough moss on everything to make you feel like you've stepped back a century. It's genuine forest rather than a manicured park, which means it rewards wandering rather than rushing through.

Walkers and families with older kids will get the most from this. The terrain can be uneven and muddy, especially after rain, so it's not ideal for pushchairs or anyone expecting a stroll. But if you're after a proper woodland walk without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots, you'll find it here. Allow an hour or two depending on how deep into the trees you fancy going.

What makes it worth the detour when you're staying at Plas Coch or Rhyd Y Galen is that it feels remote despite being within spitting distance of Bangor. The forest has that slightly wild, untamed quality that gets lost the moment somewhere becomes too popular. No manicured benches or information boards - just you and the woodland.

Bring proper shoes if you visit. The ground can be boggy in places, and the last thing you want is to spend your evening wringing out your trainers. Go when the light's decent - early morning or late afternoon turns the whole place golden.
