Park Gate Down

The view from Park Gate Down hits you properly on a clear day. You're standing on a chalk ridge east of Canterbury, looking out over the Stour Valley with enough distance between you and the next person to actually hear yourself think. This isn't a manicured tourist spot with gift shops and information boards - it's a working landscape of open grassland and the occasional walker, the sort of place locals have known about for years.

What you're doing here is walking, mostly. The downland itself is accessible, and the views justify the climb if you're coming from the Canterbury side. On a decent afternoon you can see across to the North Downs. Families with primary-aged kids will manage it fine if they're the outdoor sort, though it's not the kind of place that holds attention for hours. History types might appreciate the Iron Age fort traces, but come for the walking and the air, not the archaeology boards.

There's no visitor centre and no official facilities that I could find - bring water and wear decent boots. Early morning or late afternoon works best if you want photographs without cloud shadow wrapping everything up. Free to access, naturally.

If you're camping at Hawthorne Trench just down the road, this is a proper morning walk before breakfast. Even from Black Horse Farm at 3.7 miles out, it's worth combining with a Canterbury visit - do the downland first, then head into the cathedral and the high street when you want shelter.
