Park Wood

Woodland walks don't come much quieter than this stretch of ancient forest near Wigton. Park Wood offers proper countryside rambling through mixed deciduous trees that feel genuinely untouched by modern development. The paths here aren't signposted or manicured - this is raw Cumbrian woodland where you'll likely have the trails to yourself.

Walkers and dog owners will find plenty to explore, though families with very young children might struggle with the uneven terrain. The wood connects to broader footpath networks that stretch towards the Lake District fells, making it a lovely warm-up walk if you're staying at nearby sites like Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club.

Expect muddy boots most of the year - the paths can get properly boggy after rain. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared with decent walking boots and perhaps a flask. The reward is genuine peace and the kind of bird song you don't get in more popular spots.

It's the sort of place that works best as part of a longer walking day rather than a destination in itself. Allow an hour or two for a decent circuit, though you could easily spend longer if you're keen on wildlife spotting or just fancy a proper escape from holiday park life.
