Ruddings hill

Ruddings Hill sits just outside Wigton and offers what amounts to a proper fell walk without the full Lake District commitment. It's not a dramatic peak - you're looking at decent views across the northern fells rather than the postcard panoramas you get further south - but that's precisely why it works as a half-day outing when you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks.

The walk itself is straightforward fell walking terrain. You'll climb through open moorland with the Solway Firth visible on clear days, and the approach from Wigton is gentle enough that families with older kids can manage it without drama. The summit gives you sightlines across to Skiddaw and the higher peaks beyond, which helps you calibrate just how far Lake Land actually stretches. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on your pace and whether you stop for the views.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers based at Kestrel Lodge Campsite or Skiddaw View Holiday Park who want to stretch their legs without a full-day commitment. It's not a scramble, so it suits steady hikers more than peak baggers looking for technical challenge. The moorland can get boggy in wet weather, so go with decent boots and check conditions first.

There's no visitor infrastructure up there - bring water and something to eat. It's free to walk, naturally, and access appears unrestricted. Worth fitting in if you're spending a week doing the quieter valleys north of Bassenthwaite.
