Parkhouse Moss

The walk into Parkhouse Moss starts deceptively gentle before the forest proper kicks in near Holmrook. You're surrounded by conifers and mixed woodland that feels properly remote despite being only minutes from civilisation. The moss itself - that's bog land to most of us - sits within the trees, and it's the kind of place that makes you actually look where you're stepping.

This is walker territory, full stop. Don't come expecting waymarked paths or information boards; you'll get neither. What you get instead is genuine forest floor, a bit of squelch underfoot depending on the season, and the sort of quiet that reminds you why people bother with Cumbria in the first place. On a damp day it's atmospheric. On a dry one it's just pleasant. Either way, you're unlikely to see crowds.

Allow 90 minutes for a proper nose around, longer if you're the type to pause and listen. Summer's your best bet for footwear, though decent boots matter year-round. It's free and open whenever - the land doesn't lock up at closing time.
