About Peel Monument

You'll spot this one from miles away - a proper Victorian tower rising up on the hillside above Dronfield. The Peel Monument commemorates Sir Robert Peel, the 19th-century Prime Minister who was born nearby, and it's one of those local landmarks that most people drive past without actually knowing what they're looking at.

It's not a massive undertaking. You get a decent walk up to it across open moorland, maybe twenty minutes depending on your pace, and once you're there the views across Derbyshire are genuinely good - you can see proper distance on a clear day. The monument itself is straightforward: a tall stone tower, bit austere, very Victorian. There's a small information board explaining who Peel was and why locals thought he deserved a tower in the middle of the Pennines.

This is really one for walkers and history types rather than families expecting interactive displays or tea rooms. If you're camping at Riverside Valley or Secret Wood Glamping, both within a couple of miles, it's an excellent excuse for a morning ramble. The whole thing takes maybe an hour door-to-door if you're leisurely about it. Free to visit, naturally - it's just sitting there on the hillside.

The real appeal is less the monument itself and more what it offers as a walking hub. It's genuinely pleasant moorland country, and from here you can work out other local walks. On its own? Fair enough for a detour. As part of a broader Derbyshire walking holiday? Absolutely worth the leg stretch.
