Pen Hill

The climb up through the bracken feels properly steep until you hit the ridge, then suddenly the whole Somerset Levels spread out below like a vast green carpet. Pen Hill isn't the highest peak in the Mendips, but the views from its 305-metre summit punch well above their weight.

Walkers and families with older kids will get the most from this one - the path from Wells is clear enough, though it's a decent hike that'll take the better part of two hours return. The reward is worth every step: on a clear day you can see right across to Glastonbury Tor and beyond to the Quantock Hills.

Being common land, there's no admission fee and you can wander up whenever you fancy. Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light for photos, plus you'll likely have the place more to yourself. The hill fort remains at the top are subtle but add a bit of historical interest for those who know what to look for.

For families staying at Wells Touring Park or Long Hazel Park nearby, it makes a cracking day out combined with a visit to Wells Cathedral. The Cheddar Camping site is another good base - you could easily combine Pen Hill with the famous gorge for a proper Somerset adventure.
