Medieval streets wind around England's smallest cathedral city, where the mighty facade of Wells Cathedral dominates the skyline with its famous astronomical clock. This Somerset gem feels properly ancient - cobbled streets lead past the Bishop's Palace with its moated grounds, while the Market Cross stands sentinel over a square that's hosted traders for eight centuries.

Wells Cathedral is the obvious draw, and rightly so. The west front's stone carvings are extraordinary, though the real treat is watching the mechanical knights joust on the quarter hour. Venture beyond the city walls and the Mendip Hills reveal their secrets.
