Pen-Rhiwiau Wood

Walk into Pen-Rhiwiau Wood and you're in proper ancient woodland - the kind of place where the canopy gets so thick you lose the sky. It's a working forest near Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire, so expect a mix of conifers and broadleaves, with footpaths threading through at a gentle slope. The wood itself is manageable rather than vast, making it ideal for a two-hour ramble without needing military-grade navigation skills.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths are decent underfoot, though muddy patches are inevitable if you've had rain - standard Welsh woodland fare. Kids won't get bored if you're the type to hunt for fir cones and spot birds; younger ones might find it all a bit samey after ninety minutes. There's something quite meditative about it though, especially if you time it for early morning when the light filters through properly.

Free to access and no obvious facilities, so bring water and know where you're parked. Spring and autumn are probably best - summer can feel a touch claustrophobic under all that green, and winter's fine if you're prepared for the mud.

If you're based at Cosmos Camping or Erwain Escapes nearby - both cracking glamping options - this makes a solid morning's outing before lunch in Llandeilo. Head For The Hills Glamping is a bit further out but worth factoring in as part of a wider forest day. You won't feel you've conquered the world, but you will have had a proper walk.
