Pen Y Garn

Steep scrambles through bracken and loose scree lead to one of the most satisfying summit views in the Moelwyns. Pen Y Garn might not hit the height of its famous neighbours, but this rocky peak delivers proper mountain drama without the crowds that swarm over Snowdon. The final approach involves some light scrambling - nothing too technical, but definitely more adventurous than a typical Welsh hill walk.

From the top, the panorama stretches across Cardigan Bay to the south and takes in the entire Snowdonia range to the north. On clear days, you can spot Porthmadog spread out below like a toy town. The summit itself is a satisfying rocky affair with enough space to enjoy lunch while soaking up the views.

Serious walkers will get the most from this one - it's not really suitable for young children given the scrambling sections. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from the nearest parking. The route can be muddy after rain, and the exposed summit catches every bit of wind going.

Perfectly positioned for those staying at holiday parks around Porthmadog, including Haven Greenacres or the nearby Tyddyn Llwyn sites. Makes a cracking day out when combined with exploring the quieter corners of Snowdonia, well away from the tourist hordes.
