Porthmadog Eisteddfod Stone Circle

The stone circle sits on moorland just outside Porthmadog, a proper windswept spot that feels genuinely remote despite being walkable from town. It's not Stonehenge - the stones are modest, weathered, and there's precious little interpretation to tell you what you're actually looking at. That's either refreshing or frustrating depending on your temperament.

You're standing in a nature reserve, so the landscape matters as much as the stones themselves. Rough grassland, low scrub, views toward Snowdonia on a clear day. The walk out here takes twenty minutes or so from the car park, following paths that aren't always obvious. Bring decent shoes - the ground's boggy in places and you'll get sodden feet if you're not careful.

It works best for walkers rather than families with young children. History enthusiasts might find the lack of signage annoying; archaeologists would probably tell you that's the point. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities whatsoever. Free to visit, as far as anyone knows, though you'll need local knowledge or a decent map to find it properly.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Tyddyn Llwyn is barely a mile away - it makes a decent half-morning sortie. Don't expect it to eat a whole day. The real appeal is the isolation and the walk itself rather than the circle. Come for the moorland, not the monument.
