Penmaen Burrows Megalith Chamber (Pen-y-crug)

Stone slabs jutting from the grassy dunes mark one of Gower's most atmospheric prehistoric sites. This Neolithic burial chamber, dating back some 4,000 years, sits right on the sand dunes overlooking Three Cliffs Bay - though finding it takes a bit of detective work through the marram grass.

What remains is the skeletal framework of what archaeologists call a cromlech - essentially a stone tomb that once lay beneath an earthen mound. The capstone has long since tumbled, but the upright stones still frame views across to the Gower coastline that would have been familiar to Bronze Age communities.

History buffs and keen walkers will appreciate this more than families with young children, who might find it all a bit underwhelming after the trek through the dunes. The chamber itself takes minutes to explore, but it's the setting that makes it special - wild, windswept, and properly ancient.

Best combined with a walk along Three Cliffs Bay rather than treated as a standalone destination. From Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park or Nicholaston Farm Caravan & Camp Site, you're practically on the doorstep. The site appears to have open access year-round, though winter visits can be properly bleak when the wind's up off the Bristol Channel.
