Picket Hill

Standing at 155 metres above sea level, this modest hill offers surprisingly expansive views across the New Forest's heathland without the crowds that plague better-known viewpoints. The climb from the nearest car park takes about twenty minutes through gorse and heather, with the path clearly marked but occasionally boggy after rain.

From the summit, you'll see across to the Solent on clear days, with the Isle of Wight visible as a hazy outline. It's not dramatic in the way of proper mountains, but there's something rather satisfying about having this corner of Dorset largely to yourself. Families with older children will manage the walk easily enough, though pushchairs are definitely out of the question.

The area around Picket Hill forms part of the New Forest National Park, making it a solid addition to any holiday based at nearby campsites like Holmsley or Setthorns. Early morning visits are particularly rewarding when mist clings to the valleys below. Dog walkers frequent the lower paths, but the summit itself rarely gets busy.

Allow an hour for the round trip, longer if you fancy exploring the network of bridleways that spider out from the base. It's free, naturally, and accessible year-round, though proper walking boots are essential during wet spells when the peaty soil becomes treacherous.
