Bigsburn Hill

At 115 metres, Bigsburn Hill won't trouble any serious peak-baggers, but this modest rise on the edge of the New Forest offers surprisingly decent views across the Hampshire-Dorset border. The climb from Ringwood takes about 20 minutes through mixed woodland and heath - nothing too strenuous, though the final approach can be a bit boggy after rain.

Families with older children will find it manageable, and the summit provides a proper sense of achievement without the drama. On a clear day you can spot the Purbeck Hills to the south and the sprawling New Forest canopy stretching east. Dog walkers particularly favour the area, with plenty of off-lead opportunities once you're up top.

The hill sits conveniently close to several holiday parks, making it an easy morning sortie from places like Fernwood Glamping or Ashley Heath Caravan Park. Most visitors combine it with a longer forest walk or a trip into Ringwood itself. Allow a couple of hours return journey if you're taking your time, though keen walkers will knock it off in half that. Best avoided during summer weekends when the car parking near the base gets rather chaotic.
