Pig Wood

Pig Wood is one of those small Yorkshire forests you'd walk straight past if you weren't paying attention - which would be a shame, because it's genuinely lovely for a proper wander. Just outside Knaresborough, it's the kind of place where you can lose an hour without thinking about it, following trails through mixed woodland with the occasional clearing that opens up views across the surrounding countryside.

It's not dramatic. There's no waterfall or viewpoint tower, no café selling overpriced coffee. What you get instead is quiet woodland, decent walking paths, and the sort of peace you can't find five minutes up the road in town. Families with younger kids will manage it fine - the terrain's manageable and it's compact enough that nobody gets bored or exhausted. Older walkers appreciate the gentle nature of it. Dog owners love it, obviously.

The whole thing works well if you're staying at the nearby Knaresborough Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - just a short drive or walk away depending on how you're feeling. Pop in for an hour or two mid-morning before heading into Knaresborough proper for lunch. It breaks up the day nicely without requiring any real commitment.

Timing-wise, autumn is proper lovely here when the leaves turn. Spring's decent too. Don't expect signs and maps - just follow the main paths and you'll be fine. Entirely free, and there's no formal gate or opening hours that I can find. It's just there.
