Walking into Piked Acre Wood near Clitheroe, you're straight into proper Lancashire woodland - ancient trees, dappled light, and the kind of quiet that actually feels rare these days. It's a small, working forest rather than a manicured country park, which means fewer people and more sense of discovery.

The woodland sits on fairly hilly ground, so expect some ups and downs on the paths. Nothing brutal, but definitely not flat strolling territory. The trees are dense enough to feel like you've genuinely left somewhere behind, even though you're only minutes from Clitheroe's market town amenities. In autumn the canopy turns gold and bronze - genuinely worth timing a visit around.

Walkers get the most from Piked Acre. If you're camping at Calder Farm or Cross Lane Caravan Park - both excellent spots, three and a bit miles away - this makes an ideal morning walk before the day heats up. Bring decent shoes rather than trainers; the ground gets boggy in places. Allow an hour minimum if you're properly exploring rather than just poking around for twenty minutes.

Honestly? It's not a destination on its own. But if you're based at one of the local parks for a week, it's the kind of place you'd return to a few times without tiring of it. Kids who like climbing on fallen logs and building dens will have a better time than those expecting facilities or obvious attractions.
