Pole Covert

The woodland at Pole Covert near Bridgnorth is a proper escape from the crowds. Tucked away in rural Shropshire, it's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no theme park queues, no visitor centre gift shop nonsense, just trees and air and the occasional rustle of wildlife.

You're looking at mixed woodland with decent walking paths that wind through beech and oak. The terrain is gentle enough that families with younger kids won't spend the whole time listening to complaints about sore legs, but there's enough variation to keep it interesting. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the canopy attracts a proper mix depending on the season.

The real draw here is its position as a breathing space during a longer Shropshire walking holiday. If you're based at Wheathill Touring Park just down the road, Pole Covert works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon option - you won't need to drive far, and it fills a couple of hours without requiring military planning. Spring's probably your best bet, when the woodland floor's alive and the light cuts through the new leaves.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of - no car park amenities, no café - so come prepared with water and sturdy shoes. It's the kind of wood you visit because you want woodland, not because you want things done to you. Bring a dog and they'll have the time of their life. Expect to spend ninety minutes to two hours here depending on how deep you wander.
