Pollard Wood

Walk into Pollard Wood and you're straight into proper Kent countryside - ancient woodland where the trees have been here longer than most of us will be around. It's a genuine forest rather than a manicured park, which means tangled undergrowth, dappled light, and paths that feel like you've actually discovered something rather than followed everyone else.

The wood itself isn't massive, but it rewards a proper wander. Bring decent boots - it gets muddy even a week after rain - and go early to dodge the dog walkers who descend on weekends. The canopy does most of the work here: you're here for the peace and the green, not for facilities or attractions. There's no café, no visitor centre, no playground, which is either brilliant or a bore depending on your family.

It suits walkers, dog owners, and anyone after an hour or two of actual woodland rather than a theme-park version of nature. Kids might enjoy it if they're into den-building and finding minibeasts, but they'll be restless if you're expecting structured activities.

From Edenbridge - close enough for a morning visit - it's within striking distance of the glamping and caravan parks dotted around the area. Luna Domes, Long Acres, and Hook Farm are all five-ish miles away, making this a solid half-day option if you're basing yourself for a few nights. Free access, naturally, and open whenever daylight allows. Go in autumn when the light turns golden.
