Pont-y-Sefn Wood

Walking into Pont-y-Sefn Wood feels like stepping back into something properly wild. This patch of ancient woodland sits just outside Hereford, and it's the kind of place where the canopy gets thick enough that you lose track of the car park within minutes.

The wood itself is a mixed broadleaf affair - oak, ash, hazel - the sort of tangle that makes you understand why people used to be nervous about forests. There's a stream running through it (the Pont-y-Sefn itself), which gives the walk structure. Paths wind through the trees without being over-managed, which means it feels like an actual exploration rather than a manicured stroll.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate this: it's likely ancient woodland, the kind that's been here since medieval times. Families with younger kids might find it manageable for an hour or so, though the terrain is uneven and muddy even when dry - proper woodland, not a park walk. Serious walkers will get more out of lingering, spotting birds, finding the quieter corners.

The nearest campsite is The Fold, just two miles away, making this an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere. Chapel House Farm and Kaya at Blackhill Farm are equally close if you're based at one of the Hereford-area sites. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared.

Worth the detour if you're camping locally and want something genuine rather than groomed. Don't expect a destination in itself - think of it as a proper woodland walk to tuck into a Herefordshire park holiday.
