Pontburn Wood (Woodland Trust)

You'll know you're getting close to Pontburn Wood when the landscape starts climbing - proper woodland terrain around the Derecroft area that feels a world away from the urban sprawl of Tyne and Wear. This Woodland Trust site is a genuine working forest rather than a manicured park, which means you get the real thing: ancient trees, proper woodland floor, and the kind of quiet that makes you actually hear birdsong again.

It's a straightforward walk-round job. You're moving through mixed woodland - oak, ash, and conifers depending on which section you explore - with decent paths that don't demand anything special from your legs. The whole thing takes a couple of hours at a reasonable pace, though you could easily spend longer just sitting and watching if that appeals. Families with walkers aged seven-up will manage it fine; younger kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is both its charm and its limitation. Bring water. The admission is free - it's Woodland Trust land - though a donation wouldn't go amiss if you've got spare change.

If you're based at one of the glamping spots around Derecroft or Beamish way, this works as a solid morning or afternoon break rather than a full-day attraction.
