Port Arthur Plantation

Walking into Port Arthur Plantation, you're immediately struck by how quiet it is. The forest sits just outside Witney, and once you're past the entrance, the everyday world drops away completely. Ancient oaks and towering conifers create a cathedral-like canopy overhead, with thick bracken and moss carpeting the forest floor.

It's the kind of place that rewards proper wandering rather than a quick tick-box visit. The trees here are genuinely impressive - some of the older specimens must be centuries old. There are paths threading through in various directions, though they're not always clearly marked, which adds to the sense of discovery. Bring decent boots if it's been wet; the ground stays damp and muddy longer than you'd expect.

Historically types will appreciate what this place represents - a working forest with genuine pedigree, not just ornamental woodland. It's the real thing. Families with younger kids might find it a touch overwhelming without obvious attractions or facilities, but older children who actually enjoy being in woods rather than going to play parks will get hours out of it.

The Cotswold Edge Caravan & Camping site at Ducklington Farm is only 5.6 miles away, making this an excellent add-on to a broader Cotswolds trip. Allow at least two hours for a proper explore if you want to do the forest justice - rushing through defeats the purpose. There's something properly restorative about the place that can't be hurried.
