Preston Sands

The beach at Preston sits just north of Paignton, tucked away enough that it doesn't get choked with day-trippers the way the main seafront does. It's a proper sandy stretch backed by low cliffs and scrubland - nothing dramatic, but it works. The sand shelves gently, making it decent for families with younger kids who aren't confident swimmers yet. Rock pools appear at low tide, which will keep children occupied for a solid hour if you're lucky.

This is the kind of beach you come to if you want to actually enjoy yourself rather than play spot-the-towel. On a decent day the water's clear enough, and there's enough space that you won't feel hemmed in. It's good for a walk too - you can head along the shore and explore the cliffs without too much faffing about. The beach doesn't have the amenities of Paignton's main promenade, so bring what you need rather than relying on ice cream vans and cafes.

Stay at Waterside Holiday Park just two miles away and you're minutes from the sand. Brownscombe Luxury Glamping is another short hop if you fancy something with a bit more comfort than a caravan. The wider Paignton area keeps families busy enough - parks, shops, pubs - but Preston Sands itself is best as a half-day stop rather than somewhere to base your whole holiday. Worth including in a Devon coastal loop, particularly if you're avoiding the crowds elsewhere.
