Priddy's Hard

The guns here are real - cast iron affairs pointing out to sea, their weight and scale impossible to ignore as you walk the old fortifications. Priddy's Hard is a Victorian-era fort on the Isle of Wight's northeastern shore, built to defend against what the Victorians saw as an inevitable French invasion that never quite happened.

It's essentially a coastal defence complex, all ramparts and gun positions overlooking the Solent. You can wander the grounds, inspect the original artillery placements, and get a genuine sense of 19th-century military paranoia. The views across the water toward Lee-on-the-Solent on the mainland are decent enough, particularly on clearer days when you can pick out the shipping lanes.

This appeals mainly to history enthusiasts and military buffs - the kind of people who find Victorian engineering genuinely interesting. Families with younger children might get restless after 30 minutes unless they're into that sort of thing. The walk itself is manageable, though the exposed ramparts catch the wind something fierce.

Access appears to be free, though details are thin on the ground. Allow an hour if you're properly interested, half that if you're just passing through. It fits awkwardly into a wider Isle of Wight holiday - not quite touristy enough to be a headline attraction, but worthwhile if you're based nearby at somewhere like Woodside Bay Lodge Retreat, just a few miles away. Combine it with walks along the waterfront rather than expecting it to be a full day's entertainment.
