Southsea Common

The sweep of Southsea Common is one of those places that sneaks up on you - no grand entrance, just a proper stretch of open ground running along the seafront near Lee-on-the-Solent. You get grass, trees, and views across the Solent that shift depending on the light and tide. It's genuinely free to wander about, and there's no faffing with entrance fees or opening hours - you just show up.

What makes it work is the flexibility. Families with small kids won't get bored because there's actual space to run around - the kind of room that coastal commons offer. Walkers appreciate the flat, accessible paths, and the trees provide decent shelter when the wind picks up off the water. If you're just after somewhere to sit with a coffee and watch the boats, that scratches the itch too. History buffs might poke around the old fortifications dotted about - remnants of different eras that give the place a bit of character without demanding you read every plaque.

The common works brilliantly if you're based at Kingfisher Caravan Park or one of the other sites dotted around this stretch of coast. It's close enough for a morning walk before heading to Hayling Island, or a late afternoon potter when you can't be bothered to go far. Summer's pleasant enough, but autumn and winter when the crowds thin out feel less hectic. Allow an hour for a proper walk, or just twenty minutes if you're passing through. It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly what it promises - a decent bit of open space by the sea.
