Quarley Wood

Ancient woodland doesn't get much better than Quarley Wood near Salisbury. This is proper Hampshire - dense beech and oak forest where you can actually lose yourself for a few hours without hearing the motorway. The walking here is straightforward enough: well-trodden paths wind through the trees, and the whole place feels like it's been left alone for centuries, which it largely has.

You get what you come for - fresh air, space, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little of it exists elsewhere. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive boards explaining which oak tree was planted by Henry VIII. It's just trees, paths, and decent views across the Hampshire countryside if you climb to the higher bits. Families with older kids will enjoy it; little ones might get restless after an hour unless you're keen on letting them clamber over fallen logs.

The whole walk takes between two and three hours depending on how much you potter about. Spring's lovely here when the bluebells emerge, but honestly, any season works. There's no charge that I'm aware of - this is public access woodland, the kind that's slowly becoming rarer.

If you're staying at The Meadow Glamping nearby, you could easily combine this with exploring Salisbury itself. It sits between the cathedral city and the chalk downlands, so it makes sense as part of a proper walk-focused weekend rather than a day-trip destination.
