You'll find yourself in a working RAF station when you visit the Regiment Heritage Centre near Bury Saint Edmunds - which is either brilliant or slightly awkward depending on your patience with security checkpoints. The centre tells the story of the RAF Regiment, the ground defence force that's been protecting airfields since 1942, through photographs, uniforms, vehicles and the kind of memorabilia that makes military history types genuinely excited.

It's a proper niche attraction, no getting round that. You're not talking about crowds or queues. What you get instead is access to something most visitors never see - the working side of an active RAF base, plus exhibits that actually mean something if you've got family connections to the service or a genuine interest in Cold War Britain. Figure on ninety minutes to two hours maximum, longer if you're chatting with the volunteers who often have cracking stories.

The setting matters too. Being on the station grounds gives everything context - you're seeing where these people actually worked and trained. It's worth ringing ahead before you go, as opening hours can be restricted and you'll need to sort visitor passes.

If you're staying at West Stow Pods or Kings Forest nearby, this makes a decent half-day outing, particularly if the weather turns and you fancy something indoors. It won't suit everyone - restless kids will get bored quickly - but if military heritage appeals to you at all, it's worth the minor hassle to arrange access.
