RAF Snaith Museum

The old RAF airfield at Snaith, just outside Goole, is where you'll find what's essentially a love letter to Britain's World War II bomber crews. The museum sits on the actual station where Lancasters and other heavy bombers once thundered down the runway, and that history seeps through everything here.

Walking around, you get the full picture - restored aircraft, flight simulators that actually challenge you, and personal accounts from the men who flew from this very spot. The exhibits manage to be both serious and accessible, which isn't easy when you're dealing with wartime loss. There's proper detail here for the history enthusiasts, but families with younger kids might find themselves flagging after an hour or so - it's specialist stuff, not theme-park entertainment.

It's free to visit, which is genuinely generous given the quality of what's on show. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to do it justice; three if you're the type to read every placard.

The location works well if you're staying at one of the local parks - Between Rivers Camping is barely two miles away, Apple Blossom only marginally further. Goole itself is modest, but this museum's worth the trip on its own merits. Coming in off-season avoids the school groups and gives you breathing room to actually absorb what you're seeing.
