Rainsber Wood

The woodland walk at Rainsber Wood near Clitheroe is one of those proper local spots that doesn't demand much but delivers quietly. It's a straightforward forest trail through mixed broadleaf woodland - nothing dramatic, but solid underfoot and peaceful. You'll walk among tall trees with decent space between them, and the kind of green that feels restorative without being showy.

Walkers and families with kids of reasonable fitness will get the most from it. The paths are manageable rather than strenuous, and there's enough to hold a child's attention for an hour or so - spotting birds, looking for fallen branches that resemble swords, that sort of thing. Don't expect swings or a visitor centre; this is straightforward woodland, not a theme park.

It works best as a morning or afternoon leg of a wider Ribble Valley walk rather than a destination in itself. The nearby towns of Clitheroe sits just over a mile away if you want a coffee before or after. If you're based at Calder Farm camping or Holgates Ribble Valley just down the road, it's an easy detour. Pack an hour or 90 minutes into your day and you'll have a pleasant interlude. Admission appears to be free, and there's no obvious car park charging, though you'll need to find roadside parking nearby.

It's the kind of place that rewards you for stopping by, even if you weren't specifically planning to. Not spectacular, just genuinely nice.
