Ramparts Field

Ramparts Field is a straightforward picnic spot just east of Bury, with enough space to spread out a blanket and let the kids run around without worrying about them charging into traffic. It's the sort of place locals know about rather than tourists, which means it won't be rammed with people on a sunny afternoon - though that's partly because there's not much there beyond grass, some tables, and views across the Suffolk countryside. You get what you pay for, and since it appears to be free, that's fair enough. Allow thirty minutes to an hour if you're stopping here mid-walk, or a couple of hours if you've actually packed proper sandwiches and mean to sit about eating them.

The field works well as a pit stop during a longer ramble through the area, or as a low-key launch pad if you're staying at Kings Forest Caravan & Camping Park just down the road. That site's excellent, so if you're camped there, Ramparts Field is practically on your doorstep for a quick lunch break. The glamping pods at West Stow, two miles away, give you somewhere posher to sleep before returning here for a relaxed afternoon.

Family groups will find it perfectly serviceable - no playground equipment, but space enough for a ball game or a picnic rug. History types won't find much, and walkers might use it as a checkpoint rather than a destination. It's honest, functional, and genuinely useful if you're in the area. Not somewhere you'll write home about, but not somewhere you'd regret stopping either.
