Rass Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Preston, Rass Wood is the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss. It's not massive - you can work your way through the main paths in forty minutes or so - but it's got enough going on to justify a morning trip, especially if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks.

The wood itself is mixed deciduous, with plenty of mature trees and a decent network of trails that vary from easy woodland strolls to slightly more challenging terrain. In spring the place comes alive with bluebells. Summer's good for shade, and autumn colour, if you time it right, is worth the trip alone.

It's the kind of spot that works well for families with younger kids - they can burn off energy without you having to trek for hours - but serious walkers won't find it challenging enough to scratch an itch. What you get instead is a genuinely peaceful bit of Lancashire countryside, the sort where you'll actually hear birds instead of traffic. Dog owners will find it decent enough, though checking conditions after heavy rain is wise.

Free to access, which is always welcome. Spring and early autumn are your best bets, weather-wise. If you're staying at Northwood Caravan & Holiday Park or Dale Hey Farm, it's close enough for a half-day outing without feeling like you're wasting petrol. Not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a countryside break in the Preston area.
