Reekie Linn

The waterfall crashes down into a deep pool with proper force - you'll feel the spray from the viewing platform if the burn's running high. Reekie Linn, near Blairgowrie, is one of those Scottish Highland spots that doesn't need tourist infrastructure to work. The water cascades about 15 metres into a dark basin surrounded by woodland, and the whole thing has a slightly primordial atmosphere, especially when mist clings to the trees.

It's a short walk from the car park - maybe ten minutes - so this works well for families who don't fancy a full day's hiking. The path can be boggy and the rocks slippery, so decent boots matter. You're looking at 20-30 minutes here unless the light's exceptional and you want to sit around with a camera.

Historically minded visitors will get a kick from the fact this waterfall powered mills for centuries - the local economy basically ran on water like this. These days it's just scenery, but good scenery.

If you're staying at Nethercraig Holiday Park or Five Roads Caravan Park - both excellent - this makes a straightforward morning stop on your way to bigger walks in the area. It's not a destination in itself, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're already in the Blairgowrie region. Go when water levels are decent - after rain it's far more dramatic than a dry spell.
