Reekyrow Plantation

Walk into Reekyrow Plantation and you're immediately swallowed by tall conifers that block out half the sky. It's a working forest just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed, the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss entirely. The woodland isn't fancy - there are decent walking trails threading through, and on a grey Northumberland afternoon, it feels properly atmospheric rather than pretty.

This is walker territory, no question. The forest floor is soft underfoot and the paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though signage is minimal so a decent sense of direction helps. It's free to access and you can spend anywhere from forty minutes to a couple of hours depending on which routes you take. There's something honest about it - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just trees and quiet.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first half hour. Teenagers and proper walkers will get more from it. If you're staying at Haven Haggerston Castle Holiday Park down the road, it's worth a morning visit to stretch your legs, though it's not the sort of place you'd plan a trip around on its own.

Go in autumn when the light's better and the place feels less claustrophobic. Summer can be muggy under all that canopy. Wear proper boots - the ground gets boggy in patches.
