Reffley Wood

You'll find Reffley Wood just outside King's Lynn, a proper Norfolk woodland that's worth an afternoon if you're camping nearby. It's the kind of place where you can actually breathe - mature trees, decent paths, and enough space that you won't be dodging other walkers on a weekend. The wood itself isn't dramatic or remote, but it's genuine woodland walking without the pretension.

It works best for families with older kids and proper walkers rather than toddlers in buggies. The paths vary - some are straightforward, others get a bit boggy depending on the season. Bring decent shoes. There's something satisfying about a low-key woodland ramble where you're not fighting for Instagram angles or queuing for anything. You could easily spend ninety minutes to two hours here without feeling rushed.

The real appeal is proximity. If you're staying at Kings Lynn Caravan & Camping Park or the Sandringham site, you've got a legitimate walk on your doorstep rather than driving somewhere better known. It's free to access - no gates, no visitor centre nonsense - which is refreshing. Winter is actually decent here; the wood feels less oppressive without summer crowds, and the mud keeps things interesting.

Don't expect drama or rare wildlife displays. Come for a solid walk, some fresh air, and the genuine pleasure of getting lost in actual trees rather than a manicured nature reserve. It does exactly what it says on the tin.
