Bawsey Country Park

The old brick kilns at Bawsey are reason enough to visit, but the real draw is how the Norfolk landscape has reclaimed what was once an industrial site. You're walking through a nature reserve that's genuinely rewarding - ponds where dragonflies dart about, woodland paths that meander through scrub, and proper views across open grassland. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-off.

Most visitors are walkers and birdwatchers, though families with kids who can manage a decent ramble will find plenty to keep them interested. The ponds are genuinely good for spotting wildlife, and the mix of habitats means you might see something different depending on the season. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it seriously - longer if you sit and watch for birds.

It's free to visit, which is always a bonus. King's Lynn is just down the road, so it works brilliantly as a half-day addition to a caravan park stay. Sandringham Camping and Caravanning Club Site is four and a half miles away and makes a sensible base. The reserve gets quieter mid-week, which makes a real difference - weekends can feel a bit busier than you'd expect for somewhere this low-key.

The industrial heritage angle is interesting if you're into that sort of thing, but don't expect interpretation boards or visitor facilities. This is a place for proper walking boots and binoculars, not a café stop. It's genuinely good value and a proper breath of fresh Norfolk air.
