Bawsey Lakes

Two shallow lakes surrounded by woodland and scrubby grassland - that's Bawsey Lakes, a modest nature reserve just outside King's Lynn that punches well above its weight for birdwatchers and anyone after a proper walk away from the crowds. The water attracts migrating species, particularly in spring and autumn, so if you're into identifying warblers and wildfowl, bring binoculars and a field guide.

The whole site is free to access and you can easily spend a couple of hours here without feeling rushed. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared - pack water and check the weather. Go early or just before dusk, and you'll likely have the place to yourself.
