Riach Wood

Riach Wood sits just outside Turriff in Aberdeenshire, a proper slice of Scottish woodland that doesn't require a three-hour hike to enjoy. The forest floor is thick with moss and fallen branches, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's mixed woodland - a decent mix of conifers and broadleaves - and the paths wind through without feeling manicured or overly managed.

This is walker's territory, not a destination for people wanting a café and a gift shop. You'll get a good hour of proper forest walking here, maybe longer if you're in no rush. The canopy does a lovely job of filtering the light, and on grey Highland days that's actually rather atmospheric. Families with kids old enough to manage muddy ground will find it engaging enough, though very young children might lose interest once the path loses its novelty.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, and the place operates on the assumption you know how to conduct yourself in a wood. Parking is straightforward enough near the entrance. It's the sort of spot you'd pair with a stay at Turriff Caravan Park, about five miles away - perfect for an afternoon walk while you're based in the area. Worth half a day rather than a full day trip. Go when the weather's dry if possible; Scottish woodland can get genuinely boggy, and Riach Wood doesn't disappoint in that regard.
