Rimside Moor

The walk up Rimside Moor rewards you with proper moorland views that stretch across Northumberland's rolling terrain. It's a straightforward climb from the Morpeth side, and once you're up there the landscape opens out - all heather and grass, with sight lines that go on for miles on a clear day.

This is walker's country. The moor itself is free to roam, with no fees or gates to worry about. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on pace and fitness. The ascent isn't technically difficult but it's steady, so bring decent boots and check the weather - moorland shifts from lovely to bleak rather quickly.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find it a bit of a slog without much visual interest on the way up, though they'll perk up at the summit. History enthusiasts won't find specific attractions here, but the moor itself tells the story of Northumberland's uplands - old grazing land, working landscape, genuinely wild in patches.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks - Riverside Rothbury is closest at just over three miles away - Rimside slots nicely into a week of walking explorations. It's far less crowded than the Cheviots further west, and the drive from Morpeth is short enough that you can fit it around other activities. Go in autumn when the heather's still showing colour but the summer crowds have gone.
