Shirlaw Pike

You won't find Shirlaw Pike on many tourist maps, which is rather the point. This modest Northumberland peak rises above the rolling countryside south of Morpeth, offering proper views across the Coquet Valley if you're willing to put the legwork in.

The walk to the summit takes around 40 minutes from the nearest parking, depending on which route you fancy. There's nothing dramatic about it - no jagged ridges or scrambles - just steady climbing through moorland that shifts colour with the seasons. On a clear day you can see south towards the Pennines and north towards the coast. The kind of view that makes sense once you're up there but doesn't photograph brilliantly.

It's the sort of place that rewards walkers more than casual visitors. Kids will find it tedious if they're expecting theme parks, but those aged eight or nine and up won't mind the walk if you make it a proper expedition. The real draw is solitude - you won't be queuing with crowds. That matters when you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Riverside Rothbury or Percy Wood, both within easy striking distance.

Worth the detour? If you're already in the area and fancy a two-hour morning sortie, absolutely. If you're driving from elsewhere just for this, probably not. The Coquet Valley itself has more compelling stops - better for a day's exploring alongside the walking. Free to visit, obviously, since it's just a hill. Best on a crisp autumn morning when visibility is decent.
