Rivenhall Thicks

A proper chunk of woodland just outside Maldon, Rivenhall Thicks is the sort of place you'll stumble upon rather than plan for - which is exactly what makes it worth a visit. The forest itself is dense and genuinely quiet, with a decent network of paths threading through mixed broadleaf and conifer, and the ground stays reasonably firm even after rain, which is more than can be said for some Essex woodlands.

The walk itself takes as long as you fancy. You can knock out a brisk loop in forty minutes or take the better part of a morning ambling about. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so it's bare-bones stuff - just you, the trees, and the occasional dog walker. Families with primary-school kids will do well here; it's not demanding enough to knacker them out, but there's enough to explore that they won't be bored stiff.

Historians won't find much signposting or interpretation, but the woodland itself has been around for centuries and has that settled feel old forests get. Come in autumn when the light cuts through differently, or spring when everything's about to explode green.

If you're camping at Stocks Farm or Hoe Mill Lock nearby, this makes for a proper morning out without needing to drive far. Free to wander, no gates, no charges. Just show up and walk. That's refreshing in itself.
