Roger's Wood

Walking into Roger's Wood near Ashford, you're immediately struck by how quiet it is - proper woodland, the kind that feels a world away from Kent's busier spots. Ancient oaks, dense undergrowth, and paths that wind through without any obvious trail markers. This is a serious forest rather than a manicured country estate walk, which means it demands a bit more from you but rewards you for it.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites - Wood View Farm is only four miles away, or Wheatfields if you want something a touch more upscale. You can do a proper morning ramble here without needing to book anything or wait around. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the lack of facilities and uneven ground a bit of a slog after half an hour. Serious walkers and anyone who actually enjoys being in woodland rather than just walking through it will get genuine value from the place.

Allow at least an hour to explore properly without rushing. It's free to access - there's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no car park fee. Just a wood. That's its appeal and its limitation in equal measure. The undergrowth suggests you'd want decent boots after wet weather, and definitely avoid peak summer if you're bothered by midges. Go early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewest people. It fits perfectly into a longer Kent walking trip, though it's not a headline attraction by itself.
