Steam trains chuff through this corner of the Weald, where hop gardens once carpeted rolling hills and medieval churches still anchor sleepy villages. The area around Ashford's rural outskirts feels properly Kentish - all weatherboard cottages, ancient woodlands and that particular light you get when you're far enough from London to breathe.

Tenterden makes the best base for exploring. Its Georgian high street has real character, anchored by Tenterden Town station where the Kent & East Sussex Railway still runs heritage trains through the countryside. The Old Dairy Brewery does excellent pints if you fancy sampling local ales, while Biddenden Vineyards offers tastings amid vines that actually produce decent English wine - who'd have thought Kent could rival the continent?

Woodland walks are everywhere. Roger's Wood and Hammer Wood provide proper rambles through ancient beech and oak, perfect for clearing London fog from your lungs. Smallhythe Place, Ellen Terry's old cottage, sits quietly by the Royal Military Canal - worth the detour for theatre buffs and anyone who appreciates Arts and Crafts interiors.

The Rolvenden Layne Sound Museum is properly quirky - vintage radios and gramophones that still crackle to life. Spring Hill and Hatter's Hill offer decent views across the Weald without requiring serious hiking boots.

Getting here takes about an hour from Canterbury or Maidstone, with Ashford International just 20 minutes away by car. The area's scattered nature means having wheels helps, though the heritage railway connects several villages during operating season.

Staying at one of the local glamping sites or farms puts you right in the countryside while keeping Tenterden's shops and pubs within easy reach. It's that rare thing - genuinely rural Kent that doesn't feel like a theme park.
