Roman Building (site of)

Just outside Pulborough, a Roman building site tells you more about what Sussex was like two thousand years ago than any museum display could manage. You're standing where someone once lived or worked during the occupation - the foundations are still visible, and if you're lucky enough to catch an archaeologist on site, they'll walk you through what's been found.

The remains themselves are modest. This isn't Hadrian's Wall or some grand villa complex. It's the sort of place that makes you think about ordinary Roman life rather than conquest and empire. The setting, though, is proper lovely - rolling Sussex countryside with good walking routes nearby.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this. Families with young children might struggle unless they're already keen on archaeology. Allow an hour if you're combining it with a longer walk through the area. Check locally before you visit - opening times and access arrangements aren't always straightforward for archaeological sites.

It works well as a stop-off during a Sussex park holiday. Washington Caravan & Camping Park sits just 1.5 miles away, and Honeybridge Park at 2.4 miles would give you a solid base for exploring the Arun Valley. The site itself sits comfortably between a proper walking day and a museum visit - something to bookmark rather than plan your whole trip around, but genuinely worth the diversion if you're already in Pulborough.
