Roman Villa

The remains of a Roman villa sit quietly on the Surrey countryside just outside Redhill, and it's one of those places that rewards patience more than spectacle. What you're looking at are the foundations and floor plans of a substantial domestic building from the Roman occupation - not dramatic ruins, but genuinely absorbing if you care about how people actually lived two thousand years ago.

The site itself is fairly low-key. You'll see the layout of rooms, evidence of hypocausts (the Roman heating system), and fragments that tell you this was a proper house, not a minor settlement. It takes about 45 minutes to walk around properly and read the interpretive boards, though archaeologists could spend half a day here. The surrounding landscape is pleasant enough - rolling Surrey hills - which makes the walk there from Redhill agreeable rather than punishing.

This is archaeology for the genuinely interested, not a family day out. Kids will tolerate it for twenty minutes before asking when you're getting lunch. Walkers passing through the area might find it a worthwhile detour if they're heading towards the nearby caravan parks like Alderstead Heath or Milberry Green Meadows, all within a couple of miles.

Admission appears free, though it's worth checking locally in Redhill first as information online is sparse. Go on a clear day - the view across the valley does lift the experience beyond just staring at foundations. Summer's best; winter rain makes the site feel rather miserable.
