Roswell Pits Nature Reserve

The Roswell Pits are what happens when gravel extraction leaves behind something far more interesting than an empty hole. East of Ely, these flooded quarries have transformed into a proper wetland reserve - shallow pools fringed with reeds where you'll spot herons, egrets, and on a good day, various rarer waterfowl. It's the kind of place that rewards patience with binoculars.

The walk itself is straightforward and flat, following paths around the water's edge. Most people reckon on an hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're serious about bird spotting. Families with young kids will manage fine - there's nothing strenuous about it - though you'll need them reasonably interested in wildlife, otherwise the novelty wears thin fast.

Spring and early autumn are your best bets for visiting. The summer gets a bit stagnant and the light's harsh. Winter can be excellent too if you don't mind the cold - fewer tourists and migrating birds make an appearance.

Its real strength is as an add-on to a caravan holiday rather than a destination in itself. If you're based at Hatters Meadows or Heatherbield Lodge - both just a couple of miles away - it's an easy detour for a morning or afternoon. The landscape won't blow your mind if you're used to Norfolk's Brecks or the Fens proper, but it's a solid bit of green space that actually serves a purpose. Worth the visit if you're in the area and the weather's decent. Skip it if you're passing through on a drizzly Tuesday.
