The Money Tree

There's an old sycamore tree near Carnforth that's been collecting coins for decades. Visitors have hammered pennies, pound coins, and foreign currency into the bark until the trunk gleams with metal - hence the name. It's an odd bit of folk tradition, part wishing well, part community art project, and entirely free to visit.

The tree itself doesn't take long to see - ten minutes, fifteen if you're the type to hunt for the oldest or shiniest coins embedded in the wood. But it's oddly compelling. There's something about the sheer volume of metal, the thought of all those wishes and hopes literally nailed into living wood, that stays with you. Kids find it fascinating; history types get stuck on the questions it raises about landscape and ritual. Photographers do well here too.

It's not a full afternoon's occupation, but it works brilliantly as a stop-off during a park-based holiday. Primrose Glamping Pods is barely a mile away, and The Dalesbridge Campsite sits just down the road - both excellent bases if you're exploring North Yorkshire. Pair it with a walk or a pub visit in Carnforth proper to make a proper outing of it. Go early morning if you can; fewer people, better light for photographs, and the tree feels more contemplative.
