Round Knott

Round Knott rises abruptly from the fells south of Wigton, a modest but surprisingly rewarding peak that doesn't demand the technical skill of its more famous neighbours. The walk up takes roughly an hour depending on your fitness and where you start from - most people park near Caldbeck and approach from the south. The views from the 1,889ft summit are genuinely decent. You're looking across to Skiddaw and Blencathra on clear days, with the Eden Valley stretching out below. It's not dramatic. It won't stop you in your tracks. But there's something satisfying about standing on a fell where you've had to work for it without it taking all afternoon.

This is walker's terrain, especially for those who want to avoid the Lake District crowds or prefer a quieter fell experience. Families with older kids will manage it fine - nothing scrambling or technical, just steady gradient. Younger children might find it a bit relentless on the way up, though. You're looking at a half-day commitment if you're not rushing. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter.

If you're staying at Carrock Glamping Pods or Caldbeck Camping, Round Knott sits practically on your doorstep. It's the sort of peak you'd pair with other walks in the northern fells rather than treat as a destination in itself. Worth doing, but not worth driving two hours for. Get it done while you're in the area exploring Blencathra or the Skiddaw range.
