Royd Moor Hill

Standing at 370 metres, this modest South Yorkshire summit offers surprisingly good views across the Peak District's northern fringes without the crowds you'll find on higher peaks. The walk up from the surrounding farmland takes about 45 minutes and follows clear paths through rough moorland dotted with wind turbines - not everyone's cup of tea, but the renewable energy infrastructure doesn't dominate the landscape as much as you might expect.

Walkers and families with older children will get the most from Royd Moor Hill. The terrain underfoot can be boggy after rain, so proper boots are essential. On clear days, you can spot Sheffield's sprawl to the northeast and the distinctive bulk of Kinder Scout on the horizon.

It's free to access year-round, though parking can be limited near the base. Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you want to linger at the top. The hill works well as part of a longer walking holiday based at one of the nearby campsites like Thurlmoor Farm or High Lea Farm Camping, both within easy driving distance. While it won't set your world alight, Royd Moor Hill delivers proper fresh air and decent exercise without requiring serious mountaineering skills.
