The Pooch Park

Your dog has probably been dreaming about this since you booked the holiday. The Pooch Park, just outside Sheffield, is exactly what it sounds like - a dedicated space where your dog can properly run about without a lead, socialise with other dogs, and generally behave like a dog rather than a walking ornament on a rope.

It's genuinely straightforward: open field, other dogs, freedom. You'll spend a solid hour here if your dog's the sociable type, less if they're the 'I'd rather sit in your lap at home' variety. Worth checking their site for admission fees and opening times before you head out - these things vary - but assuming it's accessible when you visit, it solves one of camping's trickier problems: what to do with a restless spaniel while you're trying to set up the tent.

The location works well for a South Yorkshire trip. You've got Ingfield Farm Camping or High Lea Farm just a couple of miles away if you're roughing it, or step up to Beesknees Glamping or Boots and Bubbles if glamping's more your speed. All within 5 miles or so. Families with energetic dogs will get real value out of it - kids tire faster than dogs do, but watching theirs charge about while yours does the same is genuinely brilliant entertainment. Single dogs and nervous types might find it overwhelming, so judge accordingly.

One thing: bring a towel. Muddy paws are practically guaranteed, particularly after rain.
